Norfolk County Sheriff's Office

The Norfolk County Sheriff's Office is at 200 West Street, Dedham, MA 02026. You can reach them at (781) 329-3700 or (781) 329-3705. Email goes to info@norfolksheriffma.org. This office became an independent state agency on January 1, 2010. It handles all Norfolk County booking releases from the correctional center on the same property.

The Norfolk County Correctional Center sits at the West Street address in Dedham. It houses male pretrial and sentenced inmates. During the most recent audit, 4,350 inmates passed through the facility. The jail uses two systems for tracking people: the Offender Management System for custody records and the Correctional Electronic Medical Records system (CorEMR) for health data. Booking releases come out of the OMS side.

The county also runs the Norfolk County Community Correctional Center at 191 Parkingway, Quincy, MA 02169. That facility can be reached at (617) 471-7272. It serves inmates who are closer to release or in community-based programs. Booking release records for people at the Quincy location still go through the main sheriff's office in Dedham.

This page covers the DOC process, which is separate from Norfolk County. But it shows the general framework that all Massachusetts agencies follow under the public records law.

Norfolk County does not have an online inmate search. You need to use the phone, email, or visit in person. Here is how each option works.

Phone is the main method. Call (781) 329-3705 during business hours, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Give the staff the full name and date of birth of the person you want to check on. They can confirm if that person is currently in custody at the Norfolk County Correctional Center. Staff may also share basic booking release info like the booking date and charges. For after-hours inquiries, try (781) 329-3700. The main line may have staff available outside of the records office hours.

Email is another option. Send your request to info@norfolksheriffma.org. Include the inmate's name, date of birth, and your contact info. The response may take a few business days. This works for simple status checks. For a full records request, a written letter is better.

In-person visits go to the Norfolk County Correctional Center at 200 West Street in Dedham. Bring a government-issued ID. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Under MGL c. 66, § 10, you have a right to access public records including booking releases. The staff must respond to a written request within 10 business days.

Norfolk Superior Court at 650 High Street, Dedham, MA 02026 also has case records tied to bookings. Call (781) 326-1600. The Massachusetts Trial Court system may have electronic case access for some Norfolk County cases as well.

Note: Norfolk County phone inquiries for booking releases are only handled during business hours, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

What Norfolk Booking Releases Contain

A Norfolk County booking release record follows the standard Massachusetts format. The Offender Management System captures the person's full legal name, any aliases, date of birth, gender, and physical description. Height, weight, tattoos, and scars all go on file. A booking photo and fingerprints are taken at intake. The record logs the arresting agency, booking officer, date, and time.

Charges are listed with case numbers and severity levels. Bond and bail data shows the amount set, the type of bond, and whether it was posted or not. Court details include which judge is handling the case, the court of jurisdiction, and upcoming hearing dates. MGL c. 126, § 16 makes clear that county jails like Norfolk handle pretrial holds and sentences up to 2.5 years. Anything longer goes to the state DOC, and those records are in a different system entirely.

Release data is the last piece. It records when someone left, how they left (bail, sentence completion, court release, or transfer), and any conditions attached. Inmates can earn good conduct credits under MGL c. 127, § 119, which can move up a projected release date and update the booking release accordingly.

Some data stays private. Medical records tracked in the CorEMR system do not come out. Mental health files, security classification papers, victim info, and social security numbers are all off limits in a public request.

Requesting Norfolk County Booking Records

You can request Norfolk County booking releases by email, mail, or in person. Email goes to info@norfolksheriffma.org. Mail goes to the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office, 200 West Street, P.O. Box 149, Dedham, MA 02026. Include the person's full name, date of birth, and any dates you think they were in custody. Mention the Massachusetts Public Records Law.

Under 950 CMR 32, the first two hours of search time for public records requests in Massachusetts are free. After that, fees may apply at a prorated hourly rate. Copies run between $0.05 and $0.10 per page. The agency has 10 business days to respond. If they need more time, they must tell you why and give a new deadline.

For court records linked to a Norfolk County booking release, go to the Norfolk Superior Court at 650 High Street in Dedham or call (781) 326-1600. Court records can fill in details that the booking release itself may not cover, like case outcomes, sentencing details, and judicial orders. The CORI law page on mass.gov explains what counts as criminal record information and who can access it in Massachusetts.

Note: Norfolk County accepts email requests for booking release records at info@norfolksheriffma.org, which can be faster than mail.

Sealed Records and Norfolk County Bookings

Massachusetts law lets people seal certain booking releases. Under MGL c. 276, § 100C, if the charges get dismissed or the person is found not guilty, the booking release should be sealed automatically. No extra paperwork is needed for that. The Commissioner of Probation handles the sealing.

Older records can be sealed through a petition. MGL c. 276, § 100A sets the timelines: 3 years for misdemeanors, 7 years for felonies, and 15 years or more for sex offenses. Once sealed, a Norfolk County booking release will not appear in standard searches. Law enforcement can still see it, but the public cannot. CORI rules under MGL c. 6, §§ 167-178B add another layer of restrictions on who gets to see criminal records and under what circumstances.

Norfolk County facilities follow 103 CMR 932, which sets baseline standards for county jails in Massachusetts. This covers everything from healthcare requirements to how records are kept and shared. The regulation ensures that Norfolk County's booking release process meets the same minimum standards as every other county jail in the state.
